The role of Principal Advisor - HSE will have the opportunity to lead and support the delivery of our HSE objectives with people, safety health and environment at the core. With major hazards dominating the Copper product groups risk profile, this role will be charged to support key programs that materially reduce the risk across underground mining, mass transport, slope stability, molten metals, process, functional safety as well as other safety, health, and environment risks.

Reporting to the Snr Business Partner - HSE for the Copper Product group, this role is based in the Daybreak office, Salt Lake City, with an expectation for infrequent travel to other Copper assets (Mongolia, Australia, South America, and Guinea). The Copper product group spans a global footprint across multiple time zones. A hybrid / flexible working arrangement will be provided.

Working collaboratively with operational and functional teams, your key priorities will be:

  • Support and coordinate the strategic approach to Major Hazards and HSE integration and collaboration across several key areas aligned to our strategic priorities. Including supporting the technical HSEC interface.
  • Partnering with the Risk, HSES and CSP AoE teams and Copper Technical teams to align and deliver support to the assets for implementing a fit for purpose 1st Line Assurance program. (in line with the broader businesses 3 Lines of Defence (3LoD) program).
  • Embed and enhance the Safety Maturity Model by driving the sharing and replication of good practice across the teams with consideration for the Safe Production System. Support a more centralised approach to the key elements for improvement linked to SMM / SPS.
  • Support the focus on learning from our mistakes by championing the Learning Critical Lessons program in collaboration with the Rio Tinto Mongolia service delivery team.
  • Progress a strategic Health and Safety capability development program across the Copper HSEC teams.

To be successfully considered for this role, be able to demonstrate:

  • Extensive experience in HSE and or risk management on a large complex site or project.
  • HSE technical skills and a sound understanding of concepts such as fatality prevention and risk management / 1st line of assurance.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, demonstrating an ability to translate strategic objectives for various target audiences.
  • Collaborative work ethic, effectively leveraging global stakeholder networks and relationships.
  • Experience with industry knowledge and HSE regulations to understand concepts, practices, and procedures; and
  • Proven abilities in designing and deploying HSE improvement projects.
  • Strong influencing skills, and confidence to operate at all levels of the business.
