Basic Function

Provides technical support to the Integrated Health Surveillance and Diagnostics business unit. Primary responsibilities include assisting with project work within the business unit. The candidate will work in scientific teams to perform select project tasks. This position may perform technically based tasks and laboratory experimentation according to established protocols and SOPs.

Nature and Scope

This position reports to the Manager and may receive direction from other staff within the department. This position will focus on microbiology experiments including assistance in study design, execution, and analysis. The position works under general supervision and can identify and evaluate alternatives and take appropriate courses of action.

Essential Functions

  • Interacts with colleagues and visitors in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Provides technical and general support to the department.
  • Possess foundational microbiology skills (culturing, identification, genetic manipulation, etc).
  • Well organized and methodical, yet flexible in adjusting priorities, and able to take risks to accomplish goals.

  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, work within and meet deadlines, pay attention to detail, and work in a team environment.
  • Exhibit a high degree of professionalism and ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Proficient computer skills with the ability to learn new software and systems.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current student working towards an undergraduate or graduate degree in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, veterinary science, engineering, or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge and/or experience in a laboratory environment, basic laboratory and analytical skills, and a solid scientific educational background with laboratory coursework.
